HI-VIS WORKWEAR

SAFETY STANDARDS

The Canadian Standards Association’s High Visibility Safety Standard - CSA Z96-15 - covers two garment
design elements. The layout of reflective striping and luminance of background fabric determine
three Classes of safety.

CLASS 1 - LOW RISK

• Offers the minimal amount of hi-vis materials
• Reflective tape over shoulders, back and encircling waist
• Background material can be any colours
• Suitable for non-complex work environments where workers are
separated from vehicle traffic
• Examples: Workers directing vehicle operators to parking, workers
retrieving shopping carts, warehouse operations, shipping or receiving

CLASS 2 - MEDIUM RISK

• Offers protection for workers in more complex environments: closer
proximity to vehicles or low-light work areas that require greater
visibility
• Reflective tape full coverage of the upper torso including front, back,
sides, encircling waist and over shoulders
• Background material must be high visibility (i.e. lime or orange)
• Examples: Utility workers, service crews, forestry workers, school
ORANGE TRAFFIC SAFETY VEST crossing guards, airport handlers and ground crew and railway workers

CLASS 3 - HIGH RISK

• Offers the most visibility in more complex backgrounds where low
light, fast moving traffic and inclement weather are safety factors
• Reflective tape full coverage of the upper torso including front, back,
sides, encircling waist and over shoulders
• A Class 2 garment combined with arm and leg bands added
• Background material must be high visibility (i.e. lime or orange)
• Hi-Vis coveralls meet this standard; safety jackets/parkas and overalls
can be combined or arm/leg bands can be added to Class 2 garments
• Examples: Roadway construction workers, utility workers, survey
crews, emergency responders, road assistance/courtesy crews, towing
